As a Metis man, Irvin learned to work hard for financial success. He went to church with his Christian wife and learned about salvation, but procrastinated. He wanted to become a Christian, but wanted to wait until he was “good enough.” In 1976 he finally committed His life to Christ when he realized that he would never be good enough through his own efforts to earn Gods acceptance.
